The event was attended by a group of academics, economic researchers, businessmen and women, commercial banks, and civil society organizations.

In the opening of the symposium, titled “Economic Collapse in Yemen.. Backgrounds, Repercussions, and Recovery Opportunities,” the Secretary General of the Council, Mr. Mohammed Azzam, welcomed all attendees. He affirmed that holding this symposium comes within the framework of keenness to build comprehensive awareness and understanding of the living reality the country is experiencing.

Azzam explained that the root of the Yemeni crisis is clearly manifested in its economic dimension, saying: “Our problem is not primarily a military or political problem as much as it is an economic problem whose shadows have reflected on all of life and all fields.” He added that viewing the economic file as merely a margin or a secondary result of the conflict is “simplistic thinking,” stressing that issues of the economy and a decent living are the true driver and core of the current reality.

In the first paper, Assistant Professor of Economics at Taiz University, Dr. Moeen Ali Al-Huwaish, presented a comprehensive analytical framework for diagnosing the Yemeni economy during the period (2014-2025). The paper diagnosed the current economic structure by identifying 12 structural imbalances distributed among core imbalances such as excessive dependence on oil and weak governance, imbalances resulting from shocks to the banking sector and deterioration of services, in addition to cumulative imbalances represented by the expansion of poverty to include more than 80% of the population and the erosion of human capital. He explained that these distortions have led to weakening the state’s productive capacity and feeding a cycle of successive crises, stressing that reliance on community “survival mechanisms” remains a temporary solution that cannot establish a solid economy or stimulate sustainable growth.

Looking ahead to future prospects, Dr. Al-Huwaish presented three scenarios for Yemen’s economy. The first represents continued fragility and dependence on a “survival economy” based on aid and expatriate remittances. The second depicts limited gradual recovery through partial reforms and security calm. He asserted that the third scenario, “comprehensive structural transformation,” is the only path to achieving sustainable development, through radical institutional reform, unification of fiscal and monetary policies, rebuilding the productive base, and investing in people.

In his recommendations, he called for the need to expedite the unification of economic institutions and the Central Bank, control exchange rate stability, protect basic services, and support food security and microfinance for productive projects to overcome the repercussions of the current crisis.

For his part, journalist and economic researcher Wafiq Saleh, in his paper, reviewed the current economic reality in Yemen and its multi-dimensional repercussions. He highlighted the ongoing deterioration of the Yemeni economy due to the war, financial and monetary division, and the halt of oil exports, warning of its impact on living and humanitarian conditions in the country.

The paper explained that the Yemeni economy is facing continuous contraction. It confirmed that the halt of oil and gas exports since October 2022 caused a decline in public revenues and a drop in their coverage of expenditures to 51.8% in 2025, with internal public debt rising to about 8.59 trillion riyals. The researcher pointed out that monetary division, the widening gap between the two currency printings, duplication of fees, and Red Sea navigation tensions led to sharp inflationary waves and increased shipping costs, which doubled the living suffering of the population. The number of people in need of assistance reached more than 22 million people in 2026.

The researcher concluded his paper by affirming that economic recovery requires depoliticizing the economic file from political conflict. He recommended unifying monetary policy, resuming oil exports, and ensuring the regular payment of state employees’ salaries.

In his intervention, economic expert Dr. Mohammed Qahtan presented a number of practical visions and proposals that could contribute to pulling Yemen out of the state of economic collapse. He stressed the importance of institutional reforms, enhancing governance, unifying economic policies, and rebuilding trust between the state and the private sector.

The symposium witnessed extensive interventions and discussions by participants, addressing various aspects of the economic crisis and its repercussions. They affirmed the importance of unifying national efforts and activating economic and institutional reforms in a way that contributes to alleviating citizens’ suffering and laying foundations for sustainable economic recovery.

Taiz: A symposium by the Studies and Foresight Unit of the Supreme Council of the Popular Resistance discusses the economic crisis in Yemen and presents visions for recovery Taiz: Exclusive The Studies and Foresight Unit at the General Secretariat of the Supreme Council of the Popular Resistance organized an economic symposium today, Wednesday, in …

[24,42

post-2028","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-activities-en","category-articles-and-opinions
["GET
